Parker (2013) Movie Review
Adapting material from one medium to another is never an easy proposition. Adapted from “Flashfire,” one of the more recent Parker novels, Parker sees our titular antihero (played by Jason Statham) teaming up with four other guys to rob the Ohio State Fair. Things go south after they make good their escape only to spring the news that they’re using the take as seed money on a bigger score. Parker, of course, just wants to walk away with his share like they agreed on. After a heated disagreement in a Surburban, the four send the weakest guy to shoot Parker. Thinking him dead, they move on to planning their big job in Palm Beach. Injured but not dead, Parker sets out to hunt the four men down and settle the score.
Parker starts pretty strong following Statham as he arrives at the fairgrounds on the day of the robbery. The setup is told in flashback cutaways where we meet Claire (Emma Booth), Parker’s significant other, and her father, Hurley (Nick Nolte), Parker’s connection to the state fair job. We get a good sense of Parker’s character here, a man of his word who expects others to stick by theirs. The action is decent and the scene bodes well for the rest of the film. Unfortunately it’s mostly downhill from there.
The film flounders a bit while Parker heals and looks for info on the whereabouts of his four former partners. It’s a collection of scenes that don’t add much and merely move the plot along blandly but not quickly enough. And then Jennifer Lopez shows up as the down-on-her-luck Leslie Rodgers. While she’s turned in good performances in the past, in particular in Out of Sight, she’s simply awful here. The Out of Sight comparison is likely to be on the minds of audience members who recall its similar locales and circumstances, but try as she might, Lopez just can’t make her character work this time.
It would be unfair to lay all the blame at JLo’s feet though. A hefty portion should be shared by McLaughlin and Hackford. Neither seem quite sure what type of film they’re making. We are treated to scene upon scene beating us over the head with the mundane details of Leslie’s life and financial woes. At times, it feels like we’ve abandoned the Parker story entirely to instead tell the melodramatic story of Leslie’s fight to be an independent women after a nasty divorce. To those excited at the prospect of a new Parker film, filled with brutal violence and clever dialogue, these scenes are basically cinematic poison.
One of the biggest problems is that aside from the first scene setups, we don’t get a good sense of Statham as the Parker character. He’s basically just playing Statham which is pretty much what he always does, and while it’s pretty close to Parker to begin with, it’s just not enough this time around. Certainly not the way Mel played it, over-the-top and maybe more than a little crazy. But even his motivations are muddled. Most of his actions could be chalked up to revenge, but it’s the money he’s owed that should be the driving force behind Parker’s actions. Hackford hollowly lets Statham do what he wants and makes no attempt to fully define the Parker character that we paid to see.
The film stumbles its way towards its inevitable conclusion, but by this point it has exhausted all its good will. Which it does no less than 3 times before actually rolling credits. Thankfully the opening scene is halfway decent, because it may be the only thing keeping the film from being a total loss. Lopez is terrible and we spend far too much time with her character. She could be cut out completely and the film wouldn’t lose anything. It’s also far too long at just a hair under 2 hours. This story could easily fit in a nice, tidy 90 minute package.
As it is, Parker starts strong but fizzles slowly and painfully until you’re begging for it to end.

(Isabelle Nélisse), two little girls whose tragic family history leaves
them stranded in the woods for five years’ time.
When their father’s twin brother, Lucas (Game of Thrones star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau), finally tracks the girls down, it seems like the reunion is a small miracle; although Lucas’ punk-rock girlfriend Annabel (Jessica Chastain) isn’t too thrilled with the sudden shift from starving artist to maternal figure. It doesn’t help things when Annabel begins to suspect that the girls may not have been fending for themselves out there in the woods. Something watched over them, and is still watching over them in their new home; an entity the girls only refer to (in secretive whispers) as “Mama.”
Typically with these “del Toro presents” films, the acclaimed filmmaker uses his clout to both support a creepy/frightening tale that caught his macabre attention, while also helping to showcase the work of a freshman feature-film director. Stepping up to bat this time is Andrés Muschietti, the writer/director who made the 2008 Mama short film that this feature-length version is based on. Muschietti proves himself to be a visual and conceptual talent, and his film is definitely boosted by the talent of Chastain (in her pre-Oscar nom days) and the two young actresses who serve as its stars. However, while the concepts, acting and construction of the film all show hints of great skill, the execution of the storyline is where Mama fails to capitalize on its own potential.
In terms of direction, Watch Mama Online Free is a pretty strong debut for Muschietti. The cinematography is dark but vibrant (full of earthen tones) and the sequences are all visualized and constructed in sharp, creative ways. Most of the film is confined to two locations (the woodland cabin where the girls are found and a house where Lucas, Annabel and the girls are living) but how Muschietti chooses to use these set pieces and the tight space therein is fairly smart and engaging most of the time. Instead of the usual ‘calm by day, scary by night’ progression, we instead get a lot of clever scare moments executed at all times of day (even broad daylight), using angles and framing to give even mundane moments (like doing laundry) a creepy edge.
At 100 minutes run time, Mama isn’t exactly epic in length – yet it still shows the sort of fatigue and confusion that can often appear when one tries to stretch a short film out to feature length (see also: Shane Acker’s 9). While short stories allow for the quick introduction and immediate payoff of great core concepts, longer formats of storytelling require a pacing and careful balancing of time and attention that Muschietti just can’t quite get right. What we do get is about 60 minutes’ worth of very good and effective ghost story, made to look less attractive by the 40 minutes of fat hanging off of its middle. I don't fault him for the kind of humor he is attempting. It's just that this time around, very little worked.

Gangster Squad (2013) Movie Review

The trailers for Gangster Squad proudly tout stylized noir crime drama
grounded in a ”based on a true story” plot setup – promising an
unrelenting tale of L.A. cops and mobsters. However, anyone familiar
with the source material, Gangster Squad: Covert Cops, the Mob, and the
Battle for Los Angeles from journalist Paul Lieberman, will likely
remember a comparatively subdued chronicle of events (albeit with flashy
and exciting language). As a result, there’s a significant contrast
between the “real” story (even though Lieberman included his own
elaborations) and the one depicted onscreen – as actual events and
people have been exaggerated to fit Hollywood gangster movie tropes.
Still, an amplified tale of the Gangster Squad has the potential to be a great mobster drama – alongside similar offerings like The Untouchables, The Departed and LA Confidential. Does director Ruben Fleischer successfully balance that “true” story intrigue with impactful onscreen drama and entertaining characters for a great (albeit embellished) movie experience? Fleischer is best known for the flashy and tongue-in-cheek dramedy Zombieland, so it’s not surprising that Gangster Squad is a hyper-stylized take on the gangster genre. The movie utilizes a mix of fictional and real-life characters, and marries slow-motion gun fights, exploding cars, and neck-snapping fisticuffs with a very grounded and serious moral tale about men of power and the horrors of heroism. Watch Gangster Squad Online Free The combination lands Gangster Squad in an awkward grey area: a number of charming performances and memorable one-liners make the film engaging, but plot holes and shortsighted character actions leave an underwhelming overall impression. Worst of all, the focus on style-over-substance impairs nearly all of the intended opportunities for genuine emotional connection or striking ideas about Gangster Squad morality – as if Fleischer put too much energy into nodding to noir genre staples without also offering any fresh or unique ideas.

Lieberman’s Tales from the Gangster Squad first appeared in the LA Times back in 2008 as a seven-part series chronicling a band of eight covert law enforcement agents attempting to free Los Angeles from the clutches of organized crime during the 1940s and 1950s. Fleischer’s film tightens that activity window as Police Chief Bill Parker recruits former war veteran and no-nonsense cop Sergeant John O’Mara (Josh Brolin) for a last ditch, no-holds-barred effort to destroy a criminal network built by mobster Mickey Cohen (Sean Penn). O’Mara, with the assistance of his wife Connie O’Mara (Mireille Enos), selects five other do-gooder cops to join his team – Captain Coleman Harris (Anthony Mackie), Sergeant Jerry Wooters (Ryan Gosling), Detective Conway Keeler (Giovanni Ribisi), Detective Navidad Ramirez (Michael Peña), and Detective Max Kennard (Robert Patrick) - each man possessing a skill set and personal reason for joining the fight against Cohen.
Watch Gangster Squad Movie. The story provides a very straightforward series of developments and moves competently from point to point. Gunfights and criminal encounters dot from one iconic Los Angeles locale to the next, and the modern CGI visuals provide a striking retro look at the city. A beautiful set-piece in a Chinatown-like setting replaces the infamous “Theater Shooting” scene that was scrapped after the Aurora, CO theater tragedy – and, in spite of the delay, still successfully conveys the magnitude and recklessness of Cohen’s reign of terror.
Download Gangster Squad Movie. The film version of Cohen depicts a ruthless monster that only cares about expanding his influence and power by any means necessary, and Penn presents an enjoyable and believable interpretation of the mobster (who was no saint in real life, either). Some moviegoers may be distracted from time to time by Penn’s prosthetic make-up, but in this world of flashy neon sets and numerous fedora hat-tips, a stiff-faced villain is right at home. The performance won’t set a new standard for layered mobster characters, but Cohen is a cruel touchstone for the story at hand – one that helps highlight interesting shades of moral ambiguity in members of the Gangster Squad.

Broken City (2013) Movie Review
Broken City plunges us headlong into the zoo of modern New York City, where we find disgraced ex-cop Billy Taggart (Mark Wahlberg) working as a paparazzi-style private eye, taking beatings and earning ire, while being stiffed on payment by deadbeat customers. Billy gets a chance to return to the big leagues when his old acquaintance, Mayor Hostetler (Russell Crowe), calls him in for a favor: follow Cathleen Hostetler (Catherine Zeta-Jones), the mayor’s wife, to find out who she is having an affair with. Billy thinks the gig is easy money, but when his investigation is implicated as part of a high-profile murder, Taggart gets wise to a chess game of power involving politics, corruption and urban plight, in which he is just a pawn.
With Broken City, director Allen Hughes (Book of Eli) and newcomer screenwriter Brian Tucker had pretty lofty ambitions – but unfortunately, those ambitions are thwarted by a film that falls flat on its face in terms of both directorial and narrative execution. It’s a shame, because there is more thought and intelligence woven into this crime drama tale – only that wisdom is somehow lost in translation to the screen.
Download Broken City Movie. While marketed as a standard hard-boiled crime thriller, the movie is in fact an attempt at more subtle and layered commentary on many areas of city life. The title of the film is the biggest clue into what Hughes and Tucker are going for: “Broken City” is a general reference to the hypocrisies and injustices of “the system” that governs every level of urban America – as well as serving as a reference to the “broken” people who exist within that system. It could’ve been a scathing and effective commentary on very real issues (much like Se7en used crime-thriller conventions in its sly commentary on the squalid state of urban America in the ’90s); but instead, what we get is a somewhat scatter-brained narrative, populated with characters who are so compromised or unsympathetic (in one way or another) that it’s hard to root for or relate to any of them.
Watch Broken City Online. Both Wahlberg and Crowe turn in good performances (Crowe especially hams it up with his pseudo-New Yorker accent and braggadocio) – but again, those performances are only bringing to life misconceived characters in a flawed narrative, so it’s hard to applaud them all that much. Billy should be our protagonist, but with his on-and-off again alcoholism, indiscriminate brutality, questionable morals (and implied homophobia), it’s hard to know how to take the character, all things considered. Somewhat less murky is Crowe’s status as the villain in the piece – but given the surrounding characters, even a clear-cut bad guy seems less bad (comparatively speaking) by the time the end credits roll.

Episode Synopsis: The war with Daniel may be over, but the battle has left Pearson Hardman vulnerable, and Harvey must protect the firm from a rival whose attack seems as personal as it is professional.
Show Summary: “Suits” delves into the fast-paced, high-stakes world of a top Manhattan corporate law firm where Macht stars as legendary law partner, Harvey Specter, and SAG Award-nominee Adams stars as his brilliant, but not-technically-legal associate Mike Ross. Despite his lack of bonafide credentials, Mike’s photographic memory and encyclopedic legal knowledge make him an invaluable asset to Harvey.
The dynamic duo have managed to guard the secret thus far, but as the first season came to a close, Mike’s future hangs in the balance when his ex-best friend sets out to expose him to the firm’s top suit, Jessica Pearson (Torres).
But, Jessica could have bigger problems on her hands when the other half of Pearson Hardman, Daniel (guest star David Costabile) reemerges on the scene. Meanwhile, Mike’s love life has become complicated after he crossed the line with the firm’s best paralegal and his only friend in the office, Rachel (Markle). In addition to Costabile, guest stars for the season include Eric Close, John Finn, Margo Martindale and Rachel Harris.
Suits is a USA Network drama which premiered on June 23, 2011. The series stars Gabriel Macht, and Patrick J. Adams as two lawyers who, between the two of them, only have one degree. Macht stars as Harvey Specter, one of New York City's top attorneys and Adams portrays Mike Ross, whom Harvey chooses as his associate. Mike, a college dropout, never actually attended Harvard Law School as he claims with Harvey’s knowledge. Instead he relies on his eidetic memory and natural intelligence to help win cases.
Previously on Blind Sided Mike is still sharing a bed and getting high with Tess, even after the interruption from Rachel. Mike is then assigned a case of a young man named Liam (Reiley McClendon) who hit someone with his car while driving home from a party, then drove away. The memory of his own parents being killed by a drunk driver compromises Mike's ability to act in the best interest of his client. Harvey wants to celebrate Hardman's dismissal with his old colleague Zoe Lawford, but he finds that Zoe's brother has just dropped off his daughter, Olivia, on short notice. Meanwhile, Louis meets with Sheila (Rachael Harris), who already knows that he made senior partner and appears to be turned on by that fact. Louis asks for Sheila's help in landing a top-notch new associate from Harvard named Maria (Aarti Mann), but it's all for naught when Jessica makes up a "hiring freeze" to prevent Louis from getting what he wants.

Episode Synopsis: The war with Daniel may be over, but the battle has left Pearson Hardman vulnerable, and Harvey must protect the firm from a rival whose attack seems as personal as it is professional.
Show Summary: “Suits” delves into the fast-paced, high-stakes world of a top Manhattan corporate law firm where Macht stars as legendary law partner, Harvey Specter, and SAG Award-nominee Adams stars as his brilliant, but not-technically-legal associate Mike Ross. Despite his lack of bonafide credentials, Mike’s photographic memory and encyclopedic legal knowledge make him an invaluable asset to Harvey.
The dynamic duo have managed to guard the secret thus far, but as the first season came to a close, Mike’s future hangs in the balance when his ex-best friend sets out to expose him to the firm’s top suit, Jessica Pearson (Torres).
But, Jessica could have bigger problems on her hands when the other half of Pearson Hardman, Daniel (guest star David Costabile) reemerges on the scene. Meanwhile, Mike’s love life has become complicated after he crossed the line with the firm’s best paralegal and his only friend in the office, Rachel (Markle). In addition to Costabile, guest stars for the season include Eric Close, John Finn, Margo Martindale and Rachel Harris.
Suits is a USA Network drama which premiered on June 23, 2011. The series stars Gabriel Macht, and Patrick J. Adams as two lawyers who, between the two of them, only have one degree. Macht stars as Harvey Specter, one of New York City's top attorneys and Adams portrays Mike Ross, whom Harvey chooses as his associate. Mike, a college dropout, never actually attended Harvard Law School as he claims with Harvey’s knowledge. Instead he relies on his eidetic memory and natural intelligence to help win cases.
Previously on Blind Sided Mike is still sharing a bed and getting high with Tess, even after the interruption from Rachel. Mike is then assigned a case of a young man named Liam (Reiley McClendon) who hit someone with his car while driving home from a party, then drove away. The memory of his own parents being killed by a drunk driver compromises Mike's ability to act in the best interest of his client. Harvey wants to celebrate Hardman's dismissal with his old colleague Zoe Lawford, but he finds that Zoe's brother has just dropped off his daughter, Olivia, on short notice. Meanwhile, Louis meets with Sheila (Rachael Harris), who already knows that he made senior partner and appears to be turned on by that fact. Louis asks for Sheila's help in landing a top-notch new associate from Harvard named Maria (Aarti Mann), but it's all for naught when Jessica makes up a "hiring freeze" to prevent Louis from getting what he wants.

Grey's Anatomy Season 9 Episode 12 Preview
The lawsuit was settled in Grey's Anatomy Season 9, Episode 11: "The
End Is the Beginning Is the End," but that's just the beginning of the
drama. How will the hospital deal with potentially going bankrupt?
Anyway if you miss last week episode, here is some recap As Bailey
rushes to save Adele's life, everyone at the wedding wonders where she
went; Arizona tells Callie that she wants to try to have sex for the
first time since the plane crash. Cristina and Owen can't decide if
they're going to go through with the divorce or not; While a motorcycle
gang is brought to the hospital after a car accident. Everyone except
Alex and Jo are paged to the hospital forcing them to spend time
together; Shane begins wondering if April is trying to make a pass at
him. Meredith and Bailey rush to save Adele's life, eventually having
the surgery go well, and Bailey goes back to her wedding. Just as Callie
and Arizona are about to take the next step, Arizona says that she
isn't ready and that she doesn't want Callie to leave her, but Callie
reassures her that she would never leave her. Stephanie and Jackson end
up having sex, after they agree not to have sex, while Jo and Karev
begin bonding over their mutual childhood of foster care; As Bailey gets
back to her wedding, Richard shows up but tells her to go back to her
new husband, Meredith walks over and Richard tells her that Adele died
from a heart-attack.

We're assuming it’s Dr. Cahill (Constance Zimmer), who comes to the hospital to help it avoid bankruptcy, and rubs the docs the wrong way with her harsh cuts and new rules.
Arizona' phantom limb. Meanwhile, "Arizona struggles with the emotional and physical pain of a phantom limb. But don't worry, she'll be okay.
Meredith faces her fear. Also,"while battling pregnancy hormones, an overly-emotional Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo] is confronted with her worst fear." Which, based on this preview, is flying.
Grey's Anatomy Season 9 Episode 12 Synopsis: All of the plane crash victims are on edge when the judge reaches a decision regarding their case. The hospital is found guilty of negligence and each of the survivors is awarded $15 million in compensation; Derek starts playing ping-pong so he'll eventually be able to go back to surgery. Arizona butts heads with Avery when an old patient of Mark's shows up and Jackson doesn't want to do the same procedure Mark wanted to; Callie decides to throw a dinner for her and the rest of the plane crash victims. Dr. Bailey and April work on a set of patients who got hurt when the wife fell on the husband after trying to do a dance on a stripper pole; While Catherine comes into town and tries to convince Richard to go to lunch with her because she's worried about him. Jo and Alex begin growing closer, while Owen accidentally grabs Jo's breasts thinking it's Cristina; Cristina and Owen begin having sex even though they are divorced. Meredith, Richard and Heather work on a patient who eats her hair instead of arguing with her mother; At Callie's dinner, Meredith tells everyone that she's pregnant, as she can't drink the wine that Callie ordered. At the hospital Owen finds out that the insurance company won't pay the fifteen million dollars for the doctors because of a loop hole in the contract and the hospital paying for it would bankrupt them.

Peek : A NEW DANGER — Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) is furious when Klaus
(Joseph Morgan) tries to control him by putting Matt’s (Zach Roerig)
life in danger. Damon (Ian Somerhalder) coaches Jeremy as he prepares to
take on Klaus’ new vampires, but they find that Kol (guest star
Nathaniel Buzolic) has beaten them to it. Kol makes it clear that he
will stop at nothing to convince everyone to give up the search for the
cure. Looking for a new ally, Rebekah (Claire Holt) reminds Stefan (Paul
Wesley) that they were once close friends. When Sheriff Forbes
(Marguerite MacIntyre) and Mayor Hopkins (guest star Rick Worthy)
question Shane (guest star David Alpay) about his involvement in the
Founders’ Council deaths, Bonnie (Kat Graham) steps in with questions of
her own, and Shane’s responses push Bonnie to the edge of her powers.
Elena (Nina Dobrev) negotiates with Klaus to keep Jeremy safe, but when
danger suddenly appears from a totally unexpected enemy, Elena comes up

In Season 4, Episode 11, “Catch Me If You Can,” Klaus (Joseph Morgan) is still very interested in Jeremy’s (Steven R. McQueen) hunter progress. Being the impatient hybrid that he is, Klaus uses Matt (Zach Roerig) as bait to spur little Gilbert’s training. Good thing Damon (Ian Somerhalder) has been teaching the hunter new tricks.
Klaus has prepped a bunch of vampires for Jer to fight (and, presumably, kill), but Kol (Nathaniel Buzolic) pops up, extremely unsupportive of everyone’s “get the cure” cause. Meanwhile, Elena (Nina Dobrev) wants to keep her bro out of harm’s way, so she tries to strike a deal with the Original hybrid. A surprising new enemy makes her rethink the negotiation and come up with another plan. (Elena’s plans always work out, so we’re not worried.)
